Closing conference with stakeholders in Hungary

The closing conference was held in Budapest, on 9th May 2019.

After the coordinator's introduction about demographic changes and carers in the 21st century, the results of the Grandis research were presented to the audience, focusing on the digital presence and usage of tools by adults over 65.

A presentation about the positive aspects of ageing was followed by a demonstration of smart devices and AI (artificial intelligence) supporting active ageing. In the afternoon participants were introduced to the e-learning platform and the online course.

The last agenda point was a demonstration of a locally available service called Medistance by an invited representative of OMRON Hungimpex Ltd.

Attendants showed a lot of interest and were open to learning new methods and using presented devices. Many of the participants registered to the online course at the premises.

2nd event in France

On June 26, 2019 the French partner, Guimel organized an event to present the e-learning platform and the online course.

According to the feedback received, the course material is well adapted to the target audience. The majority of attendants found it relevant to integrate the training into their professionalization program.

Quality and choice - multiplier event in Dublin

The event organized by the Irish project partner, ICS Skills on 7th November 2018 was very well received. Attendants were aware of the demographic shift that would require innovative solutions for the care of older people, but had little experience of such technology in action.

They regarded the Grandis curriculum to be very helpful in reducing resistance among carers to using technology and in helping them to get started with it. The devices selected for explanation were considered relevant, practical and simple to use.

On the whole the project was welcomed as a contribution to the constant struggle of improving care of older adults, especially in the context of increasing numbers of dependent adults, and reduced resources to provide their care.

Dissemination event in France

A dissemination event was held by the French partner in Bordeaux on 31-May-2019. The curriculum and the online course was presented to attendants, who reported on the feedback form that the design of a training program covering ICT-based telecare systems was very much relevant, and that the topics covered by the four modules are all interesting for caregivers.

They found the e-learning platform attractive and easy to navigate. According to their feedback, the learning objectives of the course are clear, and the material offers good opportunities for task-based learning.

In more detail, attendants agreed that the presented learning content

allows them to assess their digital skills and acquire the missing skills (module 1),
helps them to understand demographic change, the consequences and challenges of aging and the concept of integrated care (module2),
makes it possible to become familiar with some devices (module 3),
helps to understand how ICT can help older people connect with their networks (module 4).

International conference in the UK

The aim of the event was to involve stakeholders from the UK into the needs-analysis to identify the special requirements and problems encountered from the demographic changes. The participants came from technology companies and information technology teachers to see how their view of supporting older adults in the community fits with the online survey conducted with the older adults themselves.

The main multiplier was in Aston University but a second event was held in Belgium as part of a related project coordinated by Aston University for older adults in the community. Across the two events, we involved 9 technology companies, including Blackpepper, Capgemini, Holovis, Keynetix, Majestic, Rimilia, Evolyst, BeWell Innovations and Maastricht Instruments, and 30 people coming from those companies, who teach technology, or who research with older adults in the community.

The conclusions from the discussions were that getting people to understand how to use devices and software is a major challenge. Teaching people to use technology is better done through practical demonstrations and exercises but when the devices are sold to the general public, the main way of communicating how to use them is via packaged manuals. However, these manuals are almost always supplemented by online resources where tutorials and videos can be presented, often using the youtube platform. Apps are also increasingly used to deliver the software support via mobile phones or tablets and these are another way of delivering instructions about the devices.

The multiplier event clearly concluded that the key to solving these problems is simplification, even in the face of increasingly sophisticated functionality. Interfaces designed with the target population involved are essential. However, when the users are not confident or experienced with technology, it is unrealistic to expect them to bootstrap their learning. For healthcare, the goal should be to involve the care team in setting them up and supporting them, which means both the carers and the older adults need to be trained in using the devices. The carers will also effectively be trainers of the older adults and this should be an important consideration in their own training: it should not just be about understanding digital health but also about teaching their patients to understand it.

Technical devices - Consultation with stakeholders in Hungary

On 25th October 2017 the first Hungarian consultation with stakeholders was organized by SZÁMALK-SZALÉZI Post-Secondary Vocational School in Budapest.

The aim of the event was to get familiar with senior care ICT devices and applications available in Hungary, and to start the cooperation with developers and manufacturers. Social care workers and VET teachers were represented besides the manufacturers, developers who gave the presentations.

After an overview about the project objectives, the results of the senior and teacher questionnaires were presented.

Presentations were given by guests in the following topics:

Remote care services by György Nonn, representative of G4S Zrt.
MAP Health Watch by Attila Jakab, managing director of Medical Evolution Ltd.
Telemedicine Centre - developments, future opportunities, application of digital tools in senior care by Erzsébert Forczek Szanyiné , Ph.D, from the University of Szeged.
Electronic Health Services Platform (EESZT) - opportunities and changes in healthcare by Zsolt Péter Puskás, EESZT developer.

The program ended in a discussion about future trends as well as the content of the online course, with emphasis on assistive technologies.
