O5 - Accreditation

One of the most important outcomes of Grandis XXI. project is the curriculum and the learning material of the online course “Connected Care of Older Adults” for VET students of social sector, for formal and informal caregivers working in social care of older adults.

The curriculum and the learning outcomes of the course were aligned to the educational initiatives of the European Union.

In Hungary, according to the suggestion of the adult educational expert, the training program was submitted with the title of “Using Digital Tools in maintenance the Quality of Life” and it was approved and registered by the Hungarian Government Office of Pest County (HGOPC) in the category of “D - Other Supported Trainings” in the registry of the approved adult educational courses.The participants completing the course successfully will be awarded by a certificate issued by the training institute registered by HGOPC as adult educational organization.

O4 - Online platform and pilots

In the 4th phase of the project, the online platform has been designed and set up in a Moodle environment.

Course components have been finalized and implemented in the English version. Hungarian, French and Spanish content will be uploaded as long as the English course is finalized, reviewed and approved. The course content is motivating, encourages collaboration, knowledge sharing, online communication and facilitates the activities of the participants by all means of the e-learning environment. These technological components are: learning outcomes, self-assessment tools, blogs, forums, glossary, games, e-portfolios, video tutorials.

We use a topic-oriented course structure based on a well-planned timeline. It will not be a store of online learning contents where the participants are left alone (to learn in their own pace). Instead it will be a guided learning with the presence of the tutor, who facilitates the learning process, and pays attention to each and every participant.

The pilots started in May and closed at the end of June in 2019. 130 persons registered initially on the e-learning platform (https://moodle.grandis21.hu/), and 100 of them performed activities in the courses from five countries: Hungary, Spain, France, UK, Ireland.

One of the main aims of the pilots was to facilitate the participants (formal and informal caregivers) to involve their care recipient(s) into experiments while they were working on their assignment of Module 4.

The number of participants who completed the whole course successfully was 48. The number of older adults directly involved into the experiments by course participants was 150.

According to the results of the evaluation survey the participants were highly satisfied with the learning content and with the course as a whole. In a scale of 1-5, all parts of the course were scored above 4. They appreciated especially the work of the mentors, the organization and structure of the course, they rated the assignments to be very inspiring and well balanced (not too difficult and not too easy).

O3 - Learning content development

The 3rd intellectual output is about developing the content for the 4 modules of the online course.

Module 1 aims of improving the digital skills of caregivers. Participants will perform a self-assessment, and will go through selected parts of the module according to their actual level of digital literacy. Topics are based on 4 digital competencies: Information, Communication, Content Creation and Security.

Active and healthy ageing is the topic of Module 2, including sections on the perception of seniors, demographic changes and the factors of active ageing.

Assistive technologies are dealt with in detail in Module 3. Telecare devices that were selected by the project partners before, are described here according to pre-defined aspects. Case studies, user guides, tutorial videos are included.

Module 4 is about Virtual Communities, in which participants learn about social networks and related technologies that can be used effectively in the care process.

The course content was developed partly using available open educational resources, partly created by project partners who have expertise in the subject. The project team designed animations, quizzes, practice exercises in various web 2.0 applications, to motivate participants, and also to ensure continuous assessment of learners' performance.

O2 - Curriculum Development

The curriculum for the "Networked Elderly Caregiver" course was developed at the 3rd project meeting. During this work a top-down approach was implemented. Partners agreed on the standard content elements of the course modules. They also shared the view about creating motivating content and applying teaching methods that are most suitable for adult learners.

A blended training approach was chosen, that is an online course with contact hours to ensure maximum possible engagement of learners.

It was agreed that each partner selects specific assisstive technologies locally as a supplement to the core learning content, because local needs and availability of technology differ country by country.

O1 - Training Needs of Caregivers

We addressed older people in 4 countries, including the UK, with an online questionnaire in order to identify their needs for ICT technologies that would improve their quality of life.

We also wanted to have an overall picture about how open they are to learning new skills that would enable them to join social networks in order to stay connected to family and friends, to be safe and independent at their own home and be active in the community for longer.

The GRandis desktop research and online surveys have unequivocally exposed a need for new technology to help care for older adults at home and a willingness of older adults to engage with that new technology in their care. The existing education and training courses in all countries lack a proper focus on this newer approach, with very little explicit material on the effects of demographic change and how technology can be used to offset them. Carers need to know how to use the technologies and how to train older adults to use them, neither of which are currently covered appropriately in existing courses. GRandis has highlighted the need for new material in these areas and provided a compelling rationale for how it will improve the ability of carers to look after older adults effectively in their own homes.
