Life story books (LSB) can provide a holistic view of older adults, promote relationship-centred care and enhance person-centred care. The process of developing LSB involve collecting and recording aspects of a person’s life both past and present. The purpose of this study was to engage residents in developing life story books in a nursing home setting and then to explore the narratives and documented life story books with residents and their families. A qualitative descriptive exploratory design was utilized for the study. Five residents and three family carers participated. Focus groups were tape recorded and thematically analyzed and a review of the LSB was conducted. The central themes from the data analysis related to the social construction of people’s lives, social roles and religious values, relationships and loss, and sense of self.</span></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-authors field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Teresa Wills and Mary Rose Day</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-year field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Year:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">2008</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-source-location field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Source location:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2682386/">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2682386/</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relevant-partners-tax field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Relevant partners:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/relevant-partners/all-partners" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ALL PARTNERS</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-filter field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Key words:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/life-story-books" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">life story books</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/en/documents-tags/older-adults" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">older adults</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/long-term-care-setting" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">long-term care setting</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/en/documents-tags/person-centred-care" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">person-centred care</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/and-relationship-centred-care" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">and relationship-centred care</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/en/documents-tags/irreland-care" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Irreland care</a></div></div></div> Wed, 11 Oct 2017 12:46:55 +0000 istvan.bessenyei-p8 248 at https://www.grandis21.hu https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/valuing-person%E2%80%99s-story-use-life-story-books-continuing-care-setting#comments ICT for independent living and elderly care at home https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/ict-independent-living-and-elderly-care-home <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>European policies such as the Social Investment Package for Cohesion and Growth (SIP), the Employment Package for a Job-rich Recovery and the Innovation Partnership on Healthy and Active Ageing (EIPAHA), are driving the policy agenda for the coming years in the field of long-term care. Their strategy is focused on:</p> <ul> <li>reducing growth in long-term care needs</li> <li>increasing access to and quality of care services</li> <li>increasing productivity and jobs in the care sector</li> <li>reinforcing the efficiency of long-term care systems</li> </ul> <p>These policies highlight the importance of information and communication technology (ICT)-based care services in achieving these objectives. These services range from assistive to robot technologies, and include telecare, social networking, virtual reality and other online services.  Research has demonstrated their value in helping elderly people to be more independent and cope with their physical and mental conditions. ICT-based care services also help carers to deal with stress and to carry out their care tasks better. They can also reduce the use of more expensive care services, avoiding the need for hospital admissions and shortening the length of stays in institutions. </p> <p>However, ICT-based services for long-term care are only being used on a small scale in Europe. Little scientific evidence of their effectiveness and efficiency is available. In addition, there are technological barriers for end-users, inefficient business models, and difficulties in integrating these services into the care system. These challenges have been identified in previous IPTS research.</p> <p>IPTS is therefore leading a programme of research to map and develop more systematic and scientific evidence on ICT-based services for independent living and elderly care at home. This programme aims to help European policy makers make decisions on how to design, implement and transfer successful strategies for long-term care, based on technological solutions.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-authors field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">European Comission Joint Research Centre</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-year field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Year:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">2015</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-source-location field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Source location:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="http://is.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pages/EAP/eInclusion/carers.html">http://is.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pages/EAP/eInclusion/carers.html</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relevant-partners-tax field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Relevant partners:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/relevant-partners/all-partners" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ALL PARTNERS</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-filter field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Key words:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/ict-caregiving" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ICT in caregiving</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/en/documents-tags/european-projects-summaries" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">European projects summaries</a></div></div></div> Tue, 10 Oct 2017 06:32:11 +0000 istvan.bessenyei-p8 245 at https://www.grandis21.hu https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/ict-independent-living-and-elderly-care-home#comments Information and Communication Technologies in the Care of the Elderly https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/information-and-communication-technologies-care-elderly <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><div class="sec sec-first" id="__sec1" style="clear: both; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;, stixgeneral, serif; font-size: 15.9991px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;"> <h3>Background</h3> <p>The interest in applying information and communications technology (ICT) in older adult health care is frequently promoted by the increasing and unsustainable costs of health care services. Using the social psychological theoretical approach of social representations, this research project focused on the former 17th Municipality of Rome (located on the right riverbank of the Tiber River and including the neighbourhoods of Prati and Borgo close to the Vatican City). All three older people’s centres of the municipality have participated on a voluntary basis. The total of 64 persons provided demographic information, took tests assessing cognitive skills and memory, attended focus groups and participated in in-depth interviews, in line with the multi-method approach of the social representation theory. As a result, the most significant four social representations of the cultural heritage of the former 17th Municipality of Rome have been identified and described in relation to the predominant emotions evoked. The final product consists of four short documentaries that include the selected interviews with the elderly inhabitants, insights from an archaeologist and art historian, as well as local administration and authorities.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-authors field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Laura Dryjanska</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-year field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Year:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">2013</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-source-location field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Source location:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/262916392_Cultural_Heritage_Represented_in_Memories_of_the_Elderly_Inhabitants">https://www.researchgate.net/publication/262916392_Cultural_Heritage_Rep...</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relevant-partners-tax field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Relevant partners:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/relevant-partners/all-partners" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ALL PARTNERS</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-filter field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Key words:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/active-ageing" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">active ageing</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/en/documents-tags/cultural-heritage" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cultural heritage</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/social-representations" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">social representations</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/en/documents-tags/memory" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">memory</a></div></div></div> Fri, 06 Oct 2017 11:13:09 +0000 istvan.bessenyei-p8 239 at https://www.grandis21.hu https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/cultural-heritage-represented-memories-elderly-inhabitants#comments Senior Care Networks https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/senior-care-networks <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><ul> <li><a href="http://www.huntingtonhospital.org/Community/Senior-Care-Network/Programs.aspx" style="box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(143, 187, 60); transition: color 0.5s ease 0s;">Our programs</a>. More emphasis is required on chronic disease management, on meaningful integration between acute and long-term case services, and on improved coordination between Medicare and Medicaid initiatives. This paper reviews various trends, including the growth in managed-care approaches, experience with social health maintenance organizations and Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly demonstrations, and the need for a coherent long-term care policy. Such policies, however, transcend health care and require a broad range of community initiatives.</span></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-authors field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">David Mechanic, PhD</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-year field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Year:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">1999</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-source-location field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Source location:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3456704/">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3456704/</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relevant-partners-tax field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Relevant partners:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/relevant-partners/all-partners" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ALL PARTNERS</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-filter field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Key words:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/caring-needs" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">caring needs</a></div></div></div> Sun, 01 Oct 2017 14:47:06 +0000 istvan.bessenyei-p8 202 at https://www.grandis21.hu https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/changing-elderly-population-and-future-health-care-needs#comments Elderly population https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/elderly-population <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><h1><span style="background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255); color:rgb(73, 68, 68); font-family:bernini,bernini sans, helvetica neue,helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px">The elderly population is defined as people aged 65 and over. The share of the dependent population is calculated as total elderly and youth population expressed as a ratio of the total population. The elderly dependency rate is defined as the ratio between the elderly population and the working age (15-64 years) population. The comparability of elderly population data is affected by differences, both within and across countries, in how regions and the geography of rural and urban communities, are defined. Elderly people tend to be concentrated in few areas within each country, which means that a small number of regions will have to face a number of specific social and economic challenges due to population ageing. These demographic trends have a number of implications for government and private spending on pensions, health care, and education and, more generally, for economic growth and welfare. This indicator is measured as a percentage of population.</span></h1> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-authors field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">OECD</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-year field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Year:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">2017</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-source-location field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Source location:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="https://data.oecd.org/pop/elderly-population.htm">https://data.oecd.org/pop/elderly-population.htm</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relevant-partners-tax field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Relevant partners:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/relevant-partners/all-partners" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ALL PARTNERS</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-filter field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Key words:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/en/documents-tags/elderly-population" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">elderly population</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/en/documents-tags/stastistics" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">stastistics</a></div></div></div> Sun, 01 Oct 2017 14:39:53 +0000 istvan.bessenyei-p8 201 at https://www.grandis21.hu https://www.grandis21.hu/en/content/elderly-population#comments
