Digital personal stories: bringing together generations and enriching communities

This chapter draws on a community project 'Remember' which explored the potential of digital personal stories to support cross-setting and intergenerational dialogue. Over six months, children in two Year 4 classrooms interviewed local people about their WWII experiences and documented these in writing, pictures and audio, using an iPad app called ‘Our Story’ and additional web-based resources from a local archive.

Caring is not enough: the importance of Internet skills for online privacy protection

This article explains Internet users’ self-help activities in protecting their privacy online using structural equation modeling. Based on a representative survey of Swiss Internet users, it reveals past experiences with privacy breaches as a strong predictor of current protective behavior. Further, in line with the ‘privacy paradox’ argument, caring about privacy (privacy attitudes) alone does not necessarily result in substantial self-protection.

Life story methods and care for the elderly.

The focus of the research project presented in this article is on the structure of the life stories of elderly people living in old age homes and its relationship to wellbeing or quality of life and the quality of the caring relationship. In an experimental design, we are testing the hypothesis that intervention with narrative methods has a positive effect on existential well-being and quality of the caring relationships because of the impact it has on the quality (content and structure) of the life story.

Life Story Writing for Seniors

Life story writing is an excellent way to build community with other seniors. Anne Flaxman, a certified instructor with The Center for Journal Therapy, teaches memoir writing for seniors in Fairfield County, Connecticut, as well as traveling around the country seeding new life story writing groups.
